My Weight-Loss Diary – Entry #1


I've got a big goal to lose 50 lbs. by the end of the year. Follow me on my weight-loss journey to keep me accountable and learn how you can lose weight the healthy way too!It’s been almost three weeks since I started following the Keto Diet and officially began my weight-loss journey, and since I know some of you are interested in following along, I figured why not put it all out there for the world to read, right?

If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you may already know that laying it all out there is sort of my specialty. I figure we’ve all got things that we’re not proud of, or secrets that we keep close to our hearts, or stories that are difficult to share. But through sharing these hard things with others, my hope is that I can offer a little inspiration and solidarity. Because whatever you’re going through, you’re never alone. 

Even though we don’t often talk about the hard stuff (extra weight, financial hardship, mental health issues, heartbreaking losses or all of the above), that doesn’t mean we should ever be ashamed of anything we’re dealing with. These things are all part of life and part of being human, and I, for one, am proud to own every bit of my human-ness. Every inch and pound of it! 

That being said, I’m on a mission to lose 50 lbs. (and a few inches) of my physical human body by the end of this year (Dec. 31, 2019). And I want to share my journey with you here for three reasons:

  1. In hopes that sharing the real, honest, raw truth of my weight-loss journey will help to inspire others to go after their big goals too
  2. To show you that I struggle just like anyone else, but that (hopefully) through perseverance and the right mindset, anything is possible
  3. To hold myself accountable. Because nothing is more motivating than knowing I have to check in and share my progress with the world!

I’m not gonna lie, putting myself out there is never easy. I do it all the time because that’s what I feel called to do. But it’s still nerve-wracking.

 

I never know what sort of response I’ll get and I worry about failing and about what you’ll think of me if I do. But I know that the pros outweigh the cons, and every time I’ve been really vulnerable, I’ve received an overwhelmingly positive response from other people who are going through a similar struggle or have similar goals or who maybe just feel alone and are comforted by the fact that someone’s in the trenches with them.

So here I am again, laying it all out there for everybody to see. But I know that in the end it will all be worth it.

 

How I Got Here

So how did I get to be 50 lbs. overweight? The same way most people get there… One ounce at a time.

I’ve never been skinny. My genetics are so that I’ve always had to work out and be mindful of what I eat in order to not gain a ton of weight, but most of my life I’ve been young and metabolism has been on my side. 

When I got married almost five years ago, I decided to hire a personal trainer to help me get in shape for the wedding. And I must say, I got in the best shape of my life working with that trainer and eating a healthy, high protein, low-carb, whole-foods diet. I think I was down to about 125 lbs. and I was fit, strong and healthy.

On our wedding day, at my fittest and healthiest. Five years later, things have changed a bit.

But over the course of five years, lots has happened and my body has changed. I went back to school right after we got married and became a lot more sedentary as I sat in class five days a week and sat at home writing papers and doing homework. 

Then we moved and my husband was in a major accident on the way to our new home. We lost a pet in the woods nearby when she ran from the wreck and I ended up suffering from PTSD which pretty much halted anything healthy I was doing for myself or any type of self-care whatsoever.

Then, two months after the accident, I got pregnant with our first child. My pregnancy was great and I actually didn’t gain a ton of extra weight, but I did suffer from gestational diabetes and had to learn to manage carbohydrates and blood sugar for the first time. I still ended up on insulin though.

Luckily our first baby girl, Evelyn, was born healthy and happy and she is my reason for living and pushing forward and being the best I can be every single day.

But after I gave birth my body just never really bounced back (anybody feel me on this one?). I had stretch marks, a big ol’ scar from my c-section and I just couldn’t seem to get back to my pre-baby weight of about 140 lbs. In fact, I hovered around the 160 lb. mark, which was only about 10 lbs. less than my total pregnancy weight.

Then I decided to quit smoking once and for all. And of course, as many people do, I began replacing cigarettes with food. Not a lot, but enough that I was consuming more calories than I was burning in a day. And slowly the weight began to creep on.

Then I got pregnant again.

I carried our second child all the way to 24 weeks gestation before we lost him. You can read the full story here, but suffice it to say that it did a real number on my physical body as well as my emotions. My body had an even harder time bouncing back after this pregnancy and subsequent loss. And I was emotional eating for comfort.

Then I got pregnant again, but I miscarried at just a few weeks. I was depressed and had absolutely no motivation to lose weight or take care of my physical self immediately following this loss.

But on top of everything else, I was beginning to feel more and more uncomfortable in my own skin. I was afraid to step on the scale and I hated the fact that none of my clothes fit right anymore. Plus, I knew if I wanted to carry another healthy baby to term (which I desperately want to!) I would have to do everything in my power to create a healthy environment for that baby to grow and thrive in. In short, I knew I had to make some changes. For myself and for my family.

And so I decided just before the new year that this year (2019) is the year I am going to do it.

To be honest, I wasn’t all that serious about losing the weight (especially not sharing the whole journey with the world), until I mentioned my goal of losing 50 lbs. in an email I sent out to my subscribers. I got so many amazing responses from people saying that they too wanted to lose weight and that they were rooting for me, so I decided I was going to commit AND I was going to share it all with anyone who cared to follow along.

As soon as I decided to commit, I got serious. I started to evaluate my food choices and my lifestyle and I knew that there were two main things I needed to change: I needed to start moving more, and I needed to cut out sugar.

I already cook almost exclusively from scratch at home and rarely eat processed foods, but I do like to indulge in sweet treats and alcohol (sometimes) and lots of grains and carbs. I knew this was probably the main thing in my diet that was causing me to gain weight, so after a lot of research, I decided to try the Keto Diet: A high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb diet with a lot of interesting science behind it and a ton of real-life success stories.

I decided to focus on diet first and foremost and slowly start adding in more movement. Which brings me to where I am today…

 

Three-Week Weight Loss Check-In

Okay, let’s get into it. Full disclosure time. Here’s where I’m starting from:

Yep, this is my daughter’s room. I only wish I had a tent in my room! Sigh. Adulting can be so hard.

Current weight: 180 lbs.

Current Measurements: Waist – 44” / Bust – 45” / Hips – 45”

This is pretty much where I was when I started three weeks ago. I only took my measurements yesterday so I can’t say for sure how many inches I’ve lost. And my stupid dysfunctional scale says I haven’t lost a pound. In fact, it gives me about three or four separate readings every time I step on it. Yesterday it said I’d lost a pound first thing in the morning. Then I went for a workout and didn’t consume anything except some water and a cup of coffee and it said I’d gained 5 lbs. So I’ve decided not to trust my scale.

I’m going to start checking my weight with one of those proper manual scales because I find them much more accurate. I think they have one at the gym at the community centre. Otherwise I can just stop in to weigh myself at my doctor’s office every once in a while. (Is that weird? Do they allow that??)

Anyway, for the moment, I’m not paying much attention to the scale because if I do it just makes me depressed, and one of the cardinal rules about weight-loss and getting in shape is not to let the scale be the only measure of your progress.

What’s more important at this stage is how I’m feeling!

 

How I Feel

After three weeks of Keto, I’m feeling really good! 

  • I’ve got more energy
  • My clothes fit better
  • I can tell just by looking in the mirror that I’ve lost a little weight

The scale be damned! I know my body, and I can tell I’ve lost some weight. If nothing else, I look and feel less bloated than before, which makes sense because cutting out almost all carbs results in water loss, which means less bloated puffiness. 

Starting Keto has also helped me get the ball rolling on getting back into a fitness routine and healthier lifestyle in general. I’ve started running again, taking some Zumba classes at my local community centre and tomorrow I’m going to try out boxing for the first time! Plus, I’ve been making an effort to focus on self-care in all areas of my life.

I’ve been taking regular salt baths, getting my full 8 hours of sleep, eating a healthy, whole foods Keto diet with lots of nutrient-rich veggies (not just cheese and bacon!), and most importantly, I’ve been giving myself lots of grace. So if I sneak a bite of my daughter’s pancakes or I look at the scale and I don’t see any movement, I still give myself a pat on the back for the positive changes I’ve made and then I pick myself up and keep going.

It’s a little bit crazy perhaps, since I haven’t yet seen the fruits of any of my labour (in relation to weight-loss, turning this blog into a full-time business or many other things in my life), but I believe with all the power of my being that perseverance, grit and determination (plus having a really good “why,” or reason for pursuing your goals and dreams) is all you really need to succeed at anything and everything in life. It might not happen overnight, but I believe that if you have something really important in your life motivating you every day and you have the grit and determination that it takes to persevere no matter what, you will reach your goals eventually.

This doesn’t mean you don’t or won’t fall off the wagon from time to time. We’re all human, right? But it means that when you fall, you get back up again and keep trying.

So that’s where I’m at right now. I definitely feel better than I did just a few weeks ago, but I haven’t seen a ton of measurable progress yet. And that’s just fine. I’m going to keep at it anyway, and I’ll make a point of checking in here every few weeks to let you know how it’s going and what I’ve been doing to get closer to my ultimate goal.

Just like checking the scale, I don’t think it’s the best practice to be obsessing over weight or progress every single day (or even every week), because the journey toward any big goal is a rollercoaster with lots of ups and downs, so some days and weeks will naturally be better or worse than others. But I think checking in on a monthly basis is a good idea for this particular weight-loss goal I’m working toward.     Really enjoy reading your articles, I have been very unfit and unmotivated for a long time but recently had a lifestyle change and want to improve my wellbeing, starting from my diet.. I heard green tea suppose to help with weight loss but through researching online I found information like this that said red tea is better? like this website here: https://www.priorityfitness.co.nz/why-red-tea-is-way-better-than-green-tea-2/ , what are your thoughts?       Hi Josie,

      I honestly haven’t heard of red tea! I think that you need to take it all with a grain of salt. Maybe red tea IS better than green tea, but green tea is still very good for you. I think you just need to make as healthy choices as possible but don’t worry about trying to be perfect. Sounds like you’re on the right path. Good luck!

What’s in your bug out bag??

Yesterday I was in my Stories sharing a bit about emergency preparedness and what I’m doing to get prepared for whatever the future holds.

I also asked YOU what emergency skills or supplies you recommend having in your back pocket “just in case,” and one of the responses I got was to have a bug out bag packed and ready to go.

This got me thinking it was high time to pull out my bug out bag and go through it because it’s been a couple years since I last did so. I decided to share it with you here and show you what I keep packed and ready to go and go through what needs updating and what I’m missing.

Do you have what you need on hand to take care of yourself and your family in the event of a worst case scenario?

With everything going on in the world these days, we’re getting more and more serious about equipping ourselves with the tools, supplies and skills needed to handle emergency situations if the need arises.

Between growing nuclear tensions, the ongoing threat of pandemics, cyber attacks and a looming energy crisis, medical staff and supply shortages, and general “everyday” medical, financial and other miscellaneous emergencies, we’d all be wise to be prepared BEFORE the next emergency happens.

One of our neighbours passed away very suddenly last week (just 50 years old 😔) and it reminded me of just how quickly things can go sideways. As far as we know he suffered a heart attack, and while his wife did everything she could to save him, by the time the ambulance arrived it was too late. It was a wake up call for me, that not only do we need to be prepared with supplies on hand, but with knowledge and skills too. I’m definitely looking into booking a refresher First Aid course and highly recommend everyone reading this do the same if this is a skill you need to brush up on!

This is all part of being more self-reliant, and these skills are becoming more and more important in the world these days.

If you feel like your garden struggled more than usual this year, or that many of your homesteading efforts were in vain, you’re not alone.

The world is changing faster than ever.

It’s October, and that means pumpkin spice season is officially here 🎃

This year, instead of spending $5 or more on a PSL loaded with questionable artificial ingredients, why not make your own pumpkin spice syrup at home with REAL PUMPKIN and all-natural ingredients!

All you need is some puréed pumpkin (I make mine with fresh pumpkins, but you can use canned), some brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ground cloves, allspice and ginger, a splash of vanilla extract and some water.

Bring everything to a boil and then simmer and reduce. Strain into a bottle or Mason jar and store in the fridge for up to a week or so.

Add a tablespoon or 2 of this syrup to your coffee or homemade latte for a better quality, better tasting PSL for a fraction of the cost of what you’d pay at a coffee shop.

You can also add this syrup to homemade kombucha, or drizzle it over pancakes, waffles, French toast or even ice cream!

This is why people don’t trust our medical system!!!

I very rarely go on a rant about current events but this has me feeling really fired up…

My husband and I each got an Amber Alert on our phones the other night along with millions of other British Columbians, informing us of a child abduction in Vancouver. It made the suspect sound like a dangerous kidnapper and said “do not approach. Call 911.”

As it turns out, it was the mother of the child (a 3-year-old boy), who had refused medical treatment without getting a second opinion and follow up blood tests, so the Ministry of Child and Family Services was called, she was arrested and her son was taken from her and was administered medical treatment in the hospital without consent and without a guardian present.

There’s a lot more to this story than I’m able to share in this video or this caption, so I’ll post some links below where you can hear directly from the mom what happened, and check out other IG accounts that have been in direct contact with her and the father. But the point is this was a GROSS misuse of our Amber Alert system, a GROSS abuse of power (turns out the boy wasn’t sick in the end anyway), and has now traumatized this family for life.

Doctors are not gods and as mothers we do not co-parent with the government!!!

This hits close to home for me because I too have been through the medical system and had my concerns dismissed, was misdiagnosed and given wrong information, and was treated with obvious contempt when I got a second opinion.

In this day and age of rampant medical coercion and the erosion of bodily autonomy over our own bodies and over those of our children, this story highlights the dangers of the very slippery slope we’re on.

As parents who only have the best interests of our children at heart, this could happen to any one of us. We can’t let this be normalized. Remember “first they came for (fill in the blank), and I said nothing. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me.”

I’ve hesitated about posting this reel over and over because I know I’ll probably get backlash, hate and vitriol from some people in return. But I wouldn’t be being true to myself if I didn’t speak the truth that’s on my heart and mind…

If you haven’t noticed, there are currently thousands of Canadians sharing their stories and using the hashtag #trudeaumustgo on their social media posts right now in response to the divisive rhetoric and actions of our prime minister over the past few months. But our media has downplayed the issue and has attributed most of the hashtags to “bot” accounts and foreigners trying to influence our politics.

In response, real Canadians are making videos and sharing their stories to show that we are not bots, but real people who have been negatively affected by the words and actions of our leaders, particularly our leader at the top.

I used to consider myself a lifelong leftist and have supported the liberal government and Trudeau over the years, but after what I’ve witnessed over the past few months; After how he has spoken about Canadians who have made a different medical choice or who have protested mandates (which have done nothing to stop the spread of you-know-what anyway); After the hate and division that has trickled down from the top and infiltrated our communities, I can no longer stand silently by.

While I am 💉, a few months ago when I voiced my support for those who stood up against mandates and against the division being pushed on us by our leadership, I suddenly found myself among what our prime minister called the “small fringe minority” of citizens with “unacceptable views.”

I lost followers, friends and even a couple family members. I was told I’d been “radicalized,” although my views have never changed.

So today I’m adding my voice to the chorus of real, everyday Canadians who are taking a stand against tyranny and division in this country. As the saying goes, if we do not stand for something, we’ll fall for anything. I stand for freedom & autonomy, and against division & tyranny.

What would you do if the grid went down?

Imagine not just the lights going out, but all power, all digital communication and information. Would you be prepared?

A lot of us THINK we’re prepared for a grid down situation, but unless you’re already living off grid, you might not realize how dependent on technology we really are!

In the fall issue of Modern Homesteading Magazine, contributor Ashley Constance of @dirtypawshomestead and @alittleselfreliant shares her experience voluntarily going without power for the day, and what she and her husband, Shawn learned from their grid down experiment.

You might be surprised at the things they discovered and missed on their prep list, and it might prompt you to reevaluate whether you’re ready in case the grid goes down, or even just Google 😱

The other day when I had a few minutes to spare, I was out in the garden doing a little work when my neighbour said hi over the fence.

I lamented to her about how busy we’ve been and how hard it’s been to keep on top of this year. Very sincerely, she replied “wait until you have another one,” referring to our baby on the way.

“You’ll be moving back to the suburbs so quick, mark my words,” she said.

Now, I don’t for a second think there was any ill intent behind her statement, but still, it took me aback.

“We’ll never move back to the city or the suburbs,” I replied with a laugh. “This may be hard work but we love it.”

She then repeated her statement and followed it up with “just you wait and see.”

I decided not to continue the back and forth. After all, I told myself, it doesn’t matter if she or anyone else knows what’s truly in your heart. It doesn’t matter if she understands that there’s no amount of difficulty that would make me run back to the suburbs and leave this life behind. In fact, our dream is to upgrade to a bigger property someday where we can grow an even bigger garden and add more livestock to our homestead!

Likewise, I visited the city last weekend for a family event and as always, I had at least a couple people ask me “so when are you moving back to the city?”

Seven years later, and still we have friends and family members who think this is just a phase we’re going through, and eventually we’ll come to our senses and move back.

I used to get offended by these questions because I felt unseen; I felt like nobody took this life that I’m so passionate about seriously, and thought it was “cute” that I was “playing farmer” for a bit, but eventually I had to grow up and become part of the “real world” once again.

Now I just smile and reply “never:)”

When I first started homesteading, I had a burning desire to become more self-sufficient and live a more sustainable life.

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been a rebel at heart, and learning how to homestead and become more self-reliant was a way for me to “throw a proverbial middle finger to the system” and live life on my own terms.

As a teenager, I was the girl who drove around town with punk rock music blaring from my car, Misfits sticker on the back and studs around my wrists. I felt misunderstood and angsty and like I desperately didn’t fit in with the world I grew up in.

I always knew in my soul that I wanted something different; Something more.

Today I’m the mama with stretch marks on my belly and battle scars on my heart. I’m the woman who gardens and cans food and makes her own tinctures and believes in something greater than herself and fights every day to stay free in a world that feels increasingly engineered to keep us hopelessly dependent.

Today I feel whole and at peace, and connected to a higher power and a higher purpose. I feel like I’ve finally found the place where I belong.

This journey has been about so much more than homesteading for me, and I've learned, lost, gained and loved so much more than I ever could have imagined.

Because, as I've said before, homesteading doesn't happen in a vacuum. Life is always happening at the same time.

This is the full, raw and unfiltered story of my homesteading journey, and how I've gained so much more than a pantry full of food along the way.
