In this time of uncertainty when it feels like so much in this world is out of our control, modern homesteading offers us a unique opportunity to take back some of our power and enjoy a level of personal security, freedom and control over our lives that seems to have been lost long ago.
Hi! I’m Anna, and I’m a city girl turned modern homesteader who’s passionate about growing, cooking and preserving real food at home, creating my own herbal medicine and all-natural home and body care products, and working toward a simpler, more sustainable and selfsufficient life each and every day. And I’m equally passionate about helping others do the same.
Learning how to produce what you consume, be it food, medicine, personal care products or a myriad of other things, means you don’t have to depend on the grocery store or the pharmacy to take care of you. It also means you know exactly what’s in the food, medicine and products you’re consuming, which gives you more control over your family’s overall health. And it means that you’ll still be able to provide for yourself and your family in a crisis, be it an economic crash, a food shortage, a job loss, a health crisis or any number of other emergencies.
It’s also a slower, simpler, more sustainable lifestyle that allows us the opportunity to escape the rat race, produce less waste and live a more natural life in tune with the land and the rhythms of the Earth.
It’s a self-sufficient lifestyle that allows us to provide for ourselves and our families with our own two hands rather than having to earn a paycheck just to afford all of the basic necessities of life.
It’s an empowering lifestyle that allows us to break (at least some of) our dependence on big businesses, industries and governments who put profits before people time and time again.
As a self-taught, modern homesteader who started out as a condo-dwelling city girl, I am living proof that anyone can begin homesteading wherever they are. Regardless of space, time, money or experience, you too can begin living a simpler, more sustainable and self-sufficient lifestyle TODAY!
It’s my mission, through this blog, to support you on your homesteading journey by sharing our story with you and by helping you learn the skills you need to create, grow and live a good life…from scratch!
So if you’re ready to take control of your life and enjoy a sense freedom, security and independence that many only dream of in today’s world, then you’ve come to the right place.
Welcome, friend. I’m so glad you’re here:)

Who this blog is for
This blog is for anybody and EVERYBODY with an interest in modern homesteading, regardless of experience, age, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, lifestyle and dietary choices, religion or politics.
Just as diversity is a benefit to our gardens and pantries, so too is it a benefit to our community. We can all learn from each other and grow together!
The House & Homestead is a non-denominational, progressively-minded, inclusive space and community where all people are welcome so as long as they treat others within our community with kindness and respect.
We are divided enough these days, and it is my goal to make this a space where you know you are welcome and supported on your homesteading journey regardless of your background, beliefs, skin colour, place of origin, who you love or how you choose to live your life. Because, quite honestly, none of that has much to do with homesteading anyway!
I have a zero tolerance policy for online bullying, harassment or bigotry of any kind, whether it be in the comments section of this blog or on any of The House & Homestead’s social media pages.
