Looking for a great homemade sugar scrub? This DIY peppermint sugar scrub recipe with essential oils uses all-natural ingredients and makes a quick, easy and frugal homemade gift for any occasion. This DIY peppermint sugar scrub is one of the quickest, easiest and frugal(ist?) homemade gifts ever. Plus you can make it entirely out of things you probably already have on hand!

We started making our own Christmas gifts a few years ago when money was extra tight and we had to find a way to make ends meet over the holidays. This homemade sugar scrub turned out to be a super frugal gift idea, costing us just pennies per jar to make.

Despite being cheap to make, the end product is a decadent, all-natural bath product that is more than deserving of a spot under the tree at Christmas… Or for a birthday gift… Or a bridal shower… Or just because.

Sugar scrub requires only three ingredients to make: sugar, carrier oil and essential oils.

Technically you could even make an unscented version without essential oils if you were in a pinch (or looking to be SUPER frugal), but personally I think the essential oils are really what make this gift spa-worthy.

Not to mention, it takes under a minute to whip together! So if you’re in need of a great last-minute gift idea (that doesn’t actually seem like you made it at the last minute), this sugar scrub might just be the thing that saves the day!

 

What is sugar scrub?

In short, a sugar scrub is a bath product that you use to exfoliate your skin during a bath or shower.

Use your hands or a washcloth to apply the sugar scrub and rub it all over your body. Not only will the coarse sugar granules exfoliate your skin, the carrier oil moisturizes your skin and you get the aromatherapy benefits of the essential oils too.

Technically you could just purchase sugar scrub from the store and spend upwards of $20 for a jar… I’ve even seen some name-brand sugar scrubs that retail for more than $50! But making your own homemade sugar scrub is so quick and easy that you’ll wonder why anybody pays the price for store-bought.

Plus, while I can’t say for sure what’s in those commercial body scrubs, I can tell you that this homemade sugar scrub recipe is 100% all-natural and safe for most skin types. (Always do a patch test first just in case).

In fact, I made up a fresh batch of peppermint sugar scrub yesterday and licked the spoon I used to mix it with! While I don’t recommend this (you should always be very careful with ingesting essential oils), it just goes to show that this homemade peppermint sugar scrub recipe is natural enough (and smells good enough) to eat!

How to make peppermint sugar scrub with essential oils

For this recipe, I use plain ol’ white sugar, some sort of carrier oil –olive oil, avocado oil, fractionated coconut oil or sweet almond oil are my favourites, but any liquid carrier oil will work– and some essential oils. In the past I’ve just used peppermint essential oil, but nowadays I like to add in a few drops of vanilla essential oil too. I find it gives it a bit more of a candy cane scent.

You can use any essential oils you like, however. If you’d rather make a sugar scrub with a different scent, some good options are lavender, grapefruit, chamomile or tea tree. I get all of my essential oils from Plant Therapy (whom I highly recommend for both their price and quality), but you can use any essential oils you like.

You can also substitute any type of sugar (brown sugar, organic cane sugar, coconut sugar, etc.) or you could even use salt instead!

As you can see, this is a very flexible recipe. Have fun with it!

To make your sugar scrub, add the sugar, carrier oil and essential oil(s) to a mixing bowl. Mix together until well combined, then transfer to a clean jar.

As always, Mason jars work great. Plus you can reuse your old Mason jar lids.

Add the finishing touch with custom labels 

To add a pretty finishing touch to these homemade gifts, I created custom labels to fit both wide-mouth and regular sized Mason jar lids. I’ve got Peppermint Sugar Scrub labels in both sizes, as well as generic sugar scrub labels if you decide to make a different scent or use different essential oils.

You can find and download all of my printable labels from the “Labels” section of my Free Resource Library.

I like to print labels on these brown kraft paper labels, and my downloadable labels are made to fit perfectly on a sheet of these adhesive labels. The labels fit perfectly on a wide-mouth Mason jar lid, or can easily be cut to size for a regular jar.

Of course, you can always print on standard printer paper and glue the labels on with a glue stick. Just fill in the scent on the label and stick it on, then pop the lid on and you’re done! You can literally make this gift in just a couple minutes from start to finish if you have everything on hand… Which you most likely do!

So whether you’re looking for a last-minute holiday gift for someone else or you’re in need of a little extra pampering yourself, this sugar scrub will do the trick.

Pair it with homemade bath salts and homemade whipped body butter for the ultimate spa-at-home package. Maybe even add a homemade scented candle too!

All-Natural Peppermint Sugar Scrub

Yield: one cup
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Mix sugar and carrier oil in a bowl until well combined. Adjust the amount of oil or sugar depending on your personal preferences. I find that this scrub can dry out a bit so I always add a little extra oil to mine to make it a bit more liquid.
  2. Add 10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil (depending on how strong you want the scent to be). Add 5 drops vanilla essential oil, if using. Mix well to combine.
  3. Spoon into a clean jar. This recipe should fill one half pint jar and leave just a little extra to sample yourself;)
  4. Print off the downloadable custom labels from my free resource library and stick them to the lid of your jar.
  5. Gift to someone special or enjoy the next time you take a shower or bath!

    I made this recipe and it starts to separate in just a few seconds. I followed instructions. Is this common? What can be done? Do you just not want questions. I corrected my typo error on email address then you said I had already submitted the same thing. How do I get an answer?this is not spam.

      Comments are moderated which means I need to manually approve them before they get posted, which is why it took a couple hours for you to see your comments on here. I have a newborn and a young daughter. Weeknights are busy around here with dinner, bath time and getting ready for school the next day so apologies that you didn’t get an instant reply, but I’m sure you understand I’m a regular human being behind this site providing free content and recipes and I’m not able to instantly address every comment.

      As for the sugar scrub, this separation is totally normal. I don’t find that it really separates, just that the oil-soaked sugar is heavier so it sinks to the bottom and a layer of oil rises to the top. This is actually a good thing as it acts as a protective layer so hopefully the sugar doesn’t start to solidify from oxidation.

      With natural homemade products like these, you can’t expect they will be exactly like storebought. And even so I have purchased natural sugar scrubs from companies before that have the same oil layer at the top so it’s nothing to worry about. It’s also easy enough to mix the oil into the rest of the sugar scrub with your hand whenever you dip into it to use it. It won’t affect its efficacy at all.

    I made some of this scrub with avocado oil and peppermint essential oil just as the recipe instructs. It separates and in just a few seconds there is oil standing on the top. I am very disappointed. Would you have a suggestion to remedy this?

      I’m not sure…because of the moisture content in brown sugar and the way it dries out quickly, it may produce quite a different result. That being said…I’ve never tried it myself!

      I would make this closer to Christmas. I do find that as the oil absorbs into the sugar, it can begin to dry out a bit so I would just keep the ingredients on hand and mix it up a week or 2 before. It only takes a couple minutes to mix it if you have everything else ready. You can even get your jars ready now with the labels and everything. Then it should last on the shelf for several weeks, but I like to gift it “fresh” so I tend to mix mine up close to the time when I’m going to be gifting it:)

    Just quickly put a peppermint sugar scrub together for first time. Wow, super easy. In the bit left for me I have also added tea tree oil and rosemary to replicate a commercially produced scrub I used to use. Tried a bit and super impressed, hands very clean, feel soft and smell wonderful.

    Ideal for getting hands clean after a busy day outdoors

When I graduated from university with a degree in journalism many years ago, I remember thinking that while I knew how to write, edit, interview, shoot, and handle just about every part of creating a publication from the editorial standpoint, I really had no clue how to actually get published, let alone how the printing process works.

Over the years I’ve followed my passion for writing, editing and creating content, figuring much of it out on my own. From creating my blog to “self-publishing” my own digital/print magazine for the last 4 years, I’ve taught myself most of the practical skills necessary for turning an idea into a publication and getting said publication in the hands and in front of the eyes of many hundreds of readers.

But now that I’ve joined forces with the team at @homesteadlivingmagazine and @freeportpress, we’re all able to level up and reach many THOUSANDS of print and digital readers together.

People are HUNGRY for tried and tested advice on homesteading and self-reliant living. There’s a huge movement happening right now as more people wake up to all of the corruption in the world and realize that many of the systems we have come to depend on are fragile and on the brink of collapse. People are ready to take matters into their own hands by growing their own food, preparing their own meals, becoming producers instead of merely consumers and taking control of their health, freedom, security and lives.

It’s been a minute since I popped into IG to say hi. (Hi! 👋) But before I share what’s been going on behind the scenes, I thought it would be a good time to (re)introduce myself, because I’ve never actually done that before!

My name’s Anna, and I’m a city girl turned modern homesteader living in the beautiful Comox Valley on Vancouver Island. I live with my family (human, furry and feathered) on 1/4 acre property where we grow and preserve hundreds of pounds of our own food every year, and strive to live a more self-reliant lifestyle in all that we do.

I grew up in Vancouver and had pretty much zero experience homesteading before my husband, Ryan and I decided we wanted to escape the rat race, become less dependent on the modern industrial food system (and all modern industrialized systems), and dove head first into this lifestyle around a decade ago.

We packed up and moved to Vancouver Island where we live now, started our first garden, and the rest is pretty much history.

(Well, actually that’s not true… There have been A LOT of ups and downs, successes and failures, wins and losses, struggles, challenges and pivotal moments along the way, but those are stories for another day).

Over the past few years, our decision to follow a less conventional path that aims to break free (at least in some part) from “the system” has been affirmed over and over again. We all know for a fact now that our food system, healthcare system, financial system, transportation system and so much more are all really just a house of cards built on shaky ground. We’ve been lucky so far, but sooner or later it’s all liable to collapse.

But preparedness and security isn’t the only thing that drives us… The peace of mind I get knowing that everything we grow is 100% organic, and that the ingredients in our food, medicine, personal and household products are safe and natural is worth more than anything I could buy at the grocery store.

(I’m not perfect though. Not by a long shot. I still rely on the grocery store, on modern medicine, and on many modern conveniences to get by, but I balance it as much as I can:)

It’s easy to romanticize homesteading, but the truth is that those homegrown vegetables, those freshly laid eggs, that loaf of bread rising on the counter, and that pantry full of home-canned food takes time, effort and dedication. It doesn’t “just happen” overnight!

But if you work on learning one new skill at a time and gain confidence in it before moving onto the next, one day you’ll be looking back and marvelling at how far you’ve come.

That’s where I’m at now. Life today looks a lot different than it did 10 years ago, when our homesteading and self-reliance journey was just beginning.

Back then we still lived in our city condo and were just beginning to dabble in all of this stuff. But my husband Ryan and I felt a sense urgency to start pursuing a more self-reliant lifestyle, and we committed to taking small steps, one day at a time to make that vision a reality.

Over the years we’ve continued to put one foot in front of the other, adding new skills and tackling new projects along the way that have helped us get to where we are today.

While there’s always more we want to learn and do, as I look around me right now, I’m so grateful that we took those first steps, especially considering what’s happened in the world over the past few years!

There are so many reasons to grow your own food at home:

💰 Saves you money at the grocery store
🍴 Healthier than conventionally grown food
🔑 increases your overall food security
🫙 Gives you an abundance to preserve and share

But perhaps the number one reason is because it just tastes better!

Not only does food taste better when it’s freshly picked or allowed to ripen on the vine, there’s something about putting in the work to grow something from a tiny seed and then getting to see it on your dinner plate that just makes it so much more satisfying than anything you’ll ever buy from the store.

Got out for an early morning harvest today. Been up since 3am, contemplating life, the future and the past, the order of things…

There is a rumbling right now, not just in North America, but around the world. Many of us can feel it, and know we are on the precipice of something big.

I’d been hearing about this new song that’s become an overnight viral sensation, written by an (until now) unknown singer named Oliver Anthony. His new song Rich Men North of Richmond has had 14 million views on YouTube in the past week alone, so I decided to check it out.

I also saw a clip of him playing a Farmers Market last week, and anything that has to do with Farmers Markets always has my attention;)

I can’t tell you how many tears I’ve already cried listening to that song. If you’ve heard it already, you probably know what I’m talking about, and if you haven’t, I highly recommend giving it a listen. All I can say is it’s been a while since a song resonated so deeply with me, and in this strange new world, I know I’m not the only one.

One of the lines in Anthony’s song is “Livin’ in the new world, with an old soul,” and that’s something I think so many of us in the homesteading community can relate to.

Trying to cling to better days; To a simpler time; To the old ways, all while doing our best to get by in the new world.

The world has changed drastically in the last few years especially, and it’s set to change in immense ways over the next few years. Today I’m feeling thankful for people like @oliver_anthony_music_ who give a voice to what so many are feeling right now.

Know that if you’re feeling it too, you’re far from alone. And while the future may feel uncertain and even a little scary, remember that if we stand united, we the people are a force to be reckoned with.

Another garlic harvest in the books!

Garlic is easily one of my favourite crops to grow. It’s pretty much a “set if and forget it” crop. We plant in the fall and leave it to overwinter, fertilize a couple times in the spring, start watering only once the ground starts to dry out, and then harvest in the summer. We can even plant a fall succession crop after our garlic if we want so it really makes great use of garden space all year round.

Over the years we’ve managed to become completely self-sufficient with garlic. We now grow enough to eat all year (and then some!), plus we save our own seed garlic and usually have extra to sell or give away. And around here fresh, organic garlic ain’t cheap, so it’s a good cash crop for anyone who’s serious about selling it.

It took me a few years to really get the hang of garlic, but it’s one crop I’m now very confident with (knock on wood, because it’s always when we make statements like this that next year’s crop fails! Lol.)

Going through photos and videos from our trip to the @modernhomesteadingconference and the vast majority are of our daughter having the time of her life!

Even if I personally got nothing else out of this gathering (which I most certainly did), watching her discover her own love of this lifestyle outside of what we do at home made my heart grow three sizes!

Homesteading is about so much more than homegrown food and self-reliance. It’s about passing on invaluable skills and an understanding of and respect for our connection to the land that provides for us to the next generation.

Being around so many other kids and families who are also pursuing a homesteading lifestyle helped show our little one that this is a movement that is so much bigger and greater than what our own family does on our little plot of land. This is a lifestyle worth pursuing, with a community unlike any other.

Glad to be back home and more excited than ever to involve my kids in everything we’re doing. But also, I think I speak for my whole family when I say we can’t wait to go back someday!
